A comparison of methods for lot-sizing in a rolling horizon environment Wilco van den Heuvel • Albert P.M. Wagelmans Econometric Institute and Erasmus Research Institute of Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam, PO Box 1738, 3000 DR Rotterdam, The Netherlands September 2004 We argue that the superior performance of a recent method for lot-sizing in a rolling horizon scheme is to a large extent due to the assumption that quite accurate future demand estimates are available. We show that other methods, including a straightforward one, can use this information just as effectively.

Worst-Case Analysis for a General Class of Online Lot-Sizing Heuristics
In this paper we analyze the worst case performance of heuristics for the classical economic lot-sizing problem with time-invariant cost parameters. We consider a general class of on-line heuristics that is often applied in a rolling horizon environment. We develop a procedure to systematically construct worst case instances for a fixed time horizon and use it to derive worst case problem insta...
متن کاملA hybrid ant colony optimization algorithm to optimize capacitated lot-sizing problem
The economical determination of lot size with capacity constraints is a frequently complex, problem in the real world. In this paper, a multi-level problem of lotsizing with capacity constraints in a finite planning horizon is investigated. A combination of ant colony algorithm and a heuristic method called shifting technique is proposed for solving the problem. The parameters, including the co...
متن کاملThe Finite Horizon Economic Lot Scheduling in Flexible Flow Lines
This paper addresses the common cycle multi-product lot-scheduling problem in flexible flow lines (FFL) where the product demands are deterministic and constant over a finite planning horizon. Objective is minimizing the sum of setup costs, work-in-process and final products inventory holding costs per time unite while satisfying the demands without backlogging. This problem consists of a combi...
متن کاملSimultaneous Lot Sizing and Scheduling in a Flexible Flow Line
This paper breaks new ground by modelling lot sizing and scheduling in a flexible flow line (FFL) simultaneously instead of separately. This problem, called the ‘General Lot sizing and Scheduling Problem in a Flexible Flow Line’ (GLSP-FFL), optimizes the lot sizing and scheduling of multiple products at multiple stages, each stage having multiple machines in parallel. The objective is to satisf...
متن کاملJoint rolling-horizon scheduling of materials processing and lot-sizing with sequence-dependent setups
A lot sizing and scheduling problem from a foundry is considered in which key materials are produced and then transformed into many products on a single machine. A mixed integer programming (MIP) model is developed, taking into account sequence-dependent setup costs and times, and then adapted for rolling horizon use. A relax-and-fix (RF) solution heuristic is proposed and computationally teste...
